How Do I Know If It's Fraud or a Dispute?

If you notice a charge you don't recognize, the first step is determining whether it is fraud or a dispute. Understanding the difference will help you take the correct next steps and speed up the investigation process.


Is It Fraud?

A transaction is typically considered fraud when:

  • You do not recognize the transaction
  • You did not authorize the transaction
  • You did not participate in the transaction
  • You did not receive or expect to receive any benefit from the transaction

Common Examples of Fraud

  • Your card was lost or stolen and used without your permission
  • Someone obtained your card information and made purchases
  • A transaction appears from a merchant you've never used
  • A withdrawal or purchase was made without your knowledge

Please report these types of transactions to Peak Credit Union within 48 hours of when you discovered the loss to ensure maximum recovery of funds.


How to Report Fraud

During Business Hours

  • Call (800) 258-3115

  • Visit any Peak branch

We can:

  • Block your card
  • Report unauthorized transactions
  • Open a fraud claim
  • Assist with recovery efforts
  • Help you obtain a replacement card

After Business Hours

Call (866) 272-4481 to have your card blocked immediately and prevent additional transactions.

Then contact Peak during business hours to:

  • Report unauthorized transactions
  • Open a fraud claim
  • Request a replacement card

Is It a Dispute?

A dispute occurs when you authorized the transaction, but there was a problem with the purchase or service.

Common Examples of Disputes

  • You were charged twice
  • The amount charged was incorrect
  • A subscription or service was canceled but you were still billed
  • Merchandise or services were not received
  • A promised refund or credit was never processed
  • The quality of the product or service was not as expected

    • Review the transaction

    • Gather information

    • Start the dispute process
